Themes

The wiki has one set of pages and thirteen coats of paint. Pick one here or from the dropdown in the header; your browser remembers it. Each theme has a day and a night scheme (the sun/moon toggle in the header), and every one keeps the same page anatomy: infobox, status stamps, history tables, the ticker, the build stamp in the footer.

Where each one comes from, and what it is for:

Ember

A chronicle that keeps catching fire: charred header with drifting embers, woodcut titles, taped and tilted cards, rubber-stamp badges.

Wildermyth posters, broadsides. The most "something is happening here".

Use Ember

Manuscript

Parchment and ink by day, night at the campfire by the toggle; old-style serif, a fleuron under every title, a double-ruled paper card for the infobox.

Pentiment, illuminated manuscripts. The quietest of the paper themes.

Use Manuscript

Storybook

Cream paper with faint polka dots, forest-green header, rounded lettering, sticker-card infobox with a rainbow rule.

A children's atlas of the village. The most readable of the playful ones.

Use Storybook

Field Notes

Kraft paper with a faint grid, typewriter headings, handwritten asides, an index-card infobox under a paper clip, specimen-label badges.

A naturalist's notebook. Fits "observe, then explain".

Use Field Notes

Comic Chronicle

Halftone paper, shout-titles with offset shadows, tilted yellow section panels, a comic-panel infobox, burst badges; clean sans for the body.

The comic-panel moments of the design (§13.4) as a whole site. The loudest.

Use Comic Chronicle

Tabletop

A board game on a felt table: green baize header, map-tile pages with a faint hex grid, cardboard tokens, a wooden rule under titles, meeple-coloured badges.

Board-game rulebooks. Chunky shapes, very legible body.

Use Tabletop

Encyclopedia

White page, serif headings with a thin rule, blue links, a grey one-pixel infobox. No ornament at all.

Wikipedia, and the MediaWiki game wikis that copy it. The reference look people trust.

Use Encyclopedia

Pixel

Grass-green header, dirt-brown footer, chunky stepped borders, an 8-bit face for titles only, a clean sans for reading.

The Minecraft and Terraria wikis — the game wikis more people have read than any other.

Use Pixel

Harvest

Wood-plank header, cream pages, green growth accents, chunky rounded lettering, an infobox framed in wood.

The Stardew Valley wiki, seed packets, almanacs.

Use Harvest

Terminal

A dot-matrix printout on green-bar paper by day; an amber phosphor terminal with scanlines by night. Monospace throughout, box-drawn infobox.

Dwarf Fortress and its wiki, roguelikes. The engine's ancestry.

Use Terminal

Saga

Deep teal and navy with old gold, a knotwork rule under titles, a carved-stone infobox, a sky-gradient header.

The Banner Saga, Six Ages, Norse manuscripts. The painterly epic.

Use Saga

Blueprint — the default

Cool white and slate with a dot grid and cyan accents by day; an actual blueprint, deep blue with light lines, by night. Uppercase micro-labels, crisp panels.

Stripe, Linear and Vercel docs; drafting paper. Precision over play — the technical wiki's natural home.

Use Blueprint

Midnight Ocean

Deep navy with cyan signal colours and monospace type throughout — a dashboard at 2 a.m. Always dark; the toggle switches between midnight and the abyss.

Preset's theme gallery (the Midnight Ocean configuration: background #030712, primary #00D9FF, text #E3F2FD, border #1E3A5F).

Use Midnight Ocean

Icons

The icons on every page are from game-icons.net, a library of about four thousand single-colour game icons under CC BY 3.0; the ones below are the work of the artists named beside them. Each is inlined as an SVG with fill: currentColor, so the theme you chose above colours it with its own ink (--ni-icon), and the big ones sit on a plate in the theme's accent.

For maintainers

Themes are standalone stylesheets in docs/assets/themes/, all implementing the same class contract (infobox, status, gallery, ticker, history tables, footer stamp). The default is one constant, NI_DEFAULT_THEME in overrides/main.html; the dropdown and this page come from docs/assets/theme-chooser.js. To add a theme: copy the closest file, change the palette and type, add it to the list in the script and a card here.

Icons live in overrides/.icons/ni/ and are written into pages as :ni-villager:{ .icon } (inline), { .icon-lg } (galleries, headings) or { .icon-xl } (infoboxes). To add one: pick it on game-icons.net, download the SVG, delete the 512×512 square path, change fill="#fff" to fill="currentColor", save it under the wiki name, and add a row to CREDITS.md in that folder and to the table above. The licence asks for exactly that credit, nothing else.
